Our Favourite Five

Every term we reveal an exciting set of ‘Favourite Five’ books into each classroom. These books are chosen from a range of texts some golden oldies, other newer titles ensuring that the children are exposed to diverse characters, cultures, genres and a range of authors… the idea behind this is that these books are re-read to the children frequently so that they can learn the story, read them to each other and practise using their story teller voices. They will know these stories by heart and will be able to pick up the books and be immersed.

As you enter each classroom you will be able to see our ‘Favourite Five’ and these stories will remain with the class for the year enabling the children and staff to keep re-visiting and enjoying the pure magic that is found inside a book.

Read Write Inc

We began the exciting learning journey of Read Write Inc in September 2021 and we haven't looked back since. The children and staff have been busy in their daily phonic sessions focusing on speed sounds and have loved learning with Fred Frog, who can only talk in sounds. Our phonics/reading sessions take place every day of the week and last for 45 mins. As an infant school, we prioritise early reading as we believe and inspire every child to read fluently, for meaning and enjoyment. You will find our classrooms are super busy from 9am to 9.45am with Fred, phonics and reading!

The children and staff are immersed in the language and structure of a RWI lesson and you can hear the children speedily blending and reading their speedy green words and reciting the rhymes to help them recall each single sound and their digraphs, which are referred to as special friends.

In conjunction with the sounds learned the children are taught the correct letter formation for each phoneme and in every classroom and teaching base around our school you will see friezes, speed sound charts, handwriting and posture prompts and not forgetting Fred frogs!

Assessments take place each term and children move into new groups based on these assessments, to ensure they make rapid progress and any gaps in learning are addressed quickly. We also follow the fast track tutoring programme for children who need extra support to make progress in their early reading to ensure they 'keep up, not catch up'!

We also run parent workshops each term which explains how we teach phonics, how you can support your child's reading at home and we also invite you in so you can take part in reading sessions with the children and teaching team as well.

Our reading books match the letters and sounds taught, and the children also bring home an extra matching bookbag book to extend reading opportunities at home!
