Geography
At Northway Infant school our intent is that our teaching of geography will inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
We aim to offer opportunities for children to explore the world in order to develop an understanding of the human and physical world in which they live in and their place within it. Teaching the children to enjoy learning about the world and to have a better understanding of how people live in different locations starting in the Early Years exploring the school environment and local area, and extending this to focus on different areas of the UK in Year 1 and the wider world in Year 2.
Geography lessons focus on developing geographical skills and children working as geographers:
- Children have real life experiences and learn about geography in an active and creative way whether exploring the local area, visiting contrasting places or experiencing the world through stories.
- Children are encouraged to ask questions about the world and provided with opportunities to develop the geographical skills and knowledge to be able to answer them.
- They are encouraged to consider their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.
- Children will be introduced to subject specific vocabulary that a geographer would use.
- Children will use subject specific vocabulary to talk like a geographer.
- Children will research, interpret and present like a geographer.
Our topic based curriculum encourages links to History, Science and other subject areas.
